The Tulip Umbrella is not just a visual delight but also a marvel of functionality. Each umbrella, measuring 6x6m, provides ample shade and protection from the elements. The design's unique tulip shape also allows for the easy collection of rainwater. This innovative feature is a testament to Müller-Feist's commitment to sustainable design practices.
But the innovation doesn't stop there. MDT, the design team behind the project, has equipped the umbrellas with solar panels. These panels harness the power of the sun to provide energy for mobile charging stations. This feature allows visitors to charge their mobile phones or electric bikes, adding a modern convenience to this public space.
Since its installation, the Tulip Umbrella has quickly become a beloved landmark in Youghal. The local residents have affectionately dubbed the transformed parking lot "Umbrella Square". This urban architectural intervention has not only enhanced the town's aesthetic appeal but also created a vibrant meeting place for the community.
The Tulip Umbrella's unique design and innovative features have not gone unnoticed in the design world. In 2017, it was awarded the prestigious Golden A' Street and City Furniture Design Award. This accolade is given to designs that reflect extraordinary excellence and significantly impact the world with their desirable characteristics.
With the Tulip Umbrella, Jessica Müller-Feist has demonstrated that design can be both beautiful and functional. This project serves as an inspiring example of how innovative design can transform public spaces and enhance community life.
